OOBLECK
DATE: 03-27-95
TEACHER: David Agnew
GRADE: Fifth
SKILL AREA: Science (liquids and solids)
MATERIALS: Corn Starch, water, food coloring (optional), large
bowls, spoons.
OBJECTIVES: Students Will:
1) Gain an understanding of liquids and solids and
substances that can be both or even a gas.
2) Use knowledge from the volcano lessons to relate
heat to liquifying and cooling to solids.
3) Use their knowledge to help them try to determine
if Oobleck is a liquid or a solid while comparing
other liquids and solids.
PROCEDURES: Teacher Will:
1) Ask the students for some ideas of substances
that can be liquids, solids or a gas or possibly
all three. Example, Water.
2) Discuss whether heat can change the condition of
a liquid, gas or solid.
3) Ideas about heat should come from the students
and relate to the volcano discussions from
previous lessons, Lava.
4) Pass out supplies so that each group of four
students has the opportunity to get their hands
in the experiment.
5) Give each person in the group a job:
a) Material Supply Manager, collects the
materials.
b) Recorder, someone keeping notes of the entire
experiment.
c) Mixer, person to stir and mix the material.
d) Helper, person to keep area clean and hold
the bowl while the Mixer is stirring.
NOTE: All four members are to get their hands in
the OOBLECK.
6) Ask for some of student's opinions after the
experiment. Is Oobleck a liquid or a solid?
7) Discuss some of the characteristics that the
Oobleck has and compare it to other substances.
8) Clean up the areas.
EVALUATION: Nothing to check or grade. Hopefully the activity
will stimulate the students and they will be able to think of some
neat ideas and conclusions for themselves. Observe!!
